What Is a Kundli? Understanding Your Vedic Birth Chart
A Kundli is a chart that maps the exact positions of the planets, the Sun, the Moon, and the zodiac signs at the precise moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), it serves as a personal blueprint used to understand your character, life path, relationships, career, and karmic patterns.
What a Kundli contains
A Kundli is built from three essential inputs: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. From these, an astrologer calculates your Lagna (ascendant), the placement of all nine planets across twelve houses, and your Moon sign and Nakshatra (birth star). Each house governs a specific area of life — the 1st house for self, the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career, and so on.
The 12 houses
The twelve houses of the Kundli represent the major domains of life. The 1st house reflects personality and health, the 2nd wealth and family, the 4th home and mother, the 5th children and education, the 7th marriage and partnerships, the 10th career and status, and the 11th gains and aspirations. The planets sitting in and aspecting these houses shape how each area unfolds.
Dashas and transits
Vedic astrology uses the Vimshottari Dasha system — planetary periods that show which planet governs a phase of your life and when. Combined with current transits (gochar), the Dasha framework explains why certain years bring opportunity, challenge, or change, and helps time important decisions.
Why your exact birth time matters
The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and it anchors the entire chart. A birth time that is off by even 15–20 minutes can shift house placements and alter predictions. When the exact time is unknown, birth-time rectification techniques can help estimate it more accurately.
