What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoota matching, is the process of comparing two birth charts to measure marriage compatibility. It is based on the position of the Moon in each person's chart and assesses eight factors — called kootas — that together add up to 36 points.

The 36 points are distributed across eight kootas: Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), and Nadi (8). Each koota measures a different dimension of compatibility — from temperament and mutual attraction to health of progeny and emotional bonding. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, which is why doshas in these areas are taken seriously.

What does the score actually mean?

A score between 18 and 24 indicates acceptable compatibility. A score of 25 to 32 is considered good, and 33 to 36 is excellent (though a perfect 36 is rare and not always ideal). A score under 18 suggests the match needs careful review — but it does not automatically rule out marriage.

Why the score alone isn't enough

Two charts can score well on gunas yet carry a serious Nadi Dosha or Bhakoot Dosha, and two charts with a modest score may have cancellation factors that neutralise apparent problems.
